Music Department
Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom, if you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. ~Charlie Parker
A few years ago the school’s board of governors made a decision that music at the school would become a priority. Since then the school’s music department has been growing steadily. Music can now be taken as an extra-curricular activity or as a school subject.
Extra-curricular lessons take place during other school lessons, in consultation with your child and his/her teacher(s). No learner will be taken out of the same subject twice within the 2 week cycle.
Extra-curricular pupils must kindly note that preference will be given to prospective subject learners and to learners who are already in the music programme. Please understand that this might mean your child might have to be placed on a waiting list, since space is limited.
St Dominic’s currently offers the following musical instruments:
- Piano & flute Mrs Hughes (HOD Music)
- Violin, Cello & Piano Mrs Thorn
- Saxophone Miss Wessels
- Clarinet Miss la Bercensie
- Brass instruments Mr Lottering
- Guitar (private tuition) Mr Trytsman
- Drum kit (private tuition) Mr Badenhorst
- Voice Mrs Bellingham
Musical Education is also included in the subject Arts & Culture which is taught to Junior School pupils as well as those in grade 8 & 9.
Various music groups are also available at Priory including an Ensemble Orchestra (Mrs Penny), a Flute Choir (Mrs Hughes), a Jazz Band (Miss Wessels) and seven different marimba groups (Mrs Hiscock).
There are regular opportunities to perform at school and in our community. Once a year, a Music Evening & a Talent Show are held in the School Hall.
The ensemble has also performed at various functions including the Table of Peace & Unity held at P.E.’s harbour (2008), Eisteddford, the Alex Mass Band evening, School Mass and Assembly. Various pupils & groups are also entered in the Eisteddfod, SAMTA (South African Music Teacher's Association). Many have come back with wonderful results. In 2008, for the first time a number of students auditioned for the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (ECPO) Youth Experience & Priory had a 100% acceptance.
