Drama Club
Drama
Ms L. Gillies
It was a ground-breaking moment as Drama Club 2009 began in January. With 56 Grade 3-5 children and 38 Grade 6-7s, this was definitely a record. How refreshing to see so many children keen to take part in the performing arts.
With a packed year behind us, the mystery remains, “What does 2010 have in store?” We spent a cultural evening beneath the stars, as local stars dazzled us with their performances in the Port Elizabeth Shakespearean Society’s portrayal of “Romeo and Juliet”. Many left baffled, but entertained. However, a great time was had by all.
“Romeo…Romeo! Where fore art thou Romeo?” – William Shakespeare
By Buhle Dlamini
As the clock struck 7:30pm the wind started to blow at St. George’s Park. The dramatic arts took control of the Manville outdoor theatre. This year was the turn of Romeo and Juliet, a true classic tale about forbidden love. Each actor was passionate about his or her role. The actors who played Romeo and Juliet gave a fabulous performance. The play had a dash of love, a pinch of humour and a sprinkle of drama. Over fifty Grade 6’s and 7’s supported Manville’s cultural evening. Some understood what was being said while some didn’t know what in the world was going on! Well, this year was as amazing as last year and I can’t wait until next year’s Shakespeare.
The Grade 6 and 7 children were given the opportunity to take part in the Eastern Cape Arts and Culture Eisteddfod in Grahamstown in May.
Grahamstown Eisteddfod
by Ingrid Carstens
After weeks of preparation, the day finally arrived. On Tuesday 12 May 2009, 15 nervous grade 6’s and 7’s left school at 8 o’clock to attend the Annual Drama Eisteddfod in Grahamstown. We travelled for an hour and a half and when we got there we were all very excited. The Eisteddfod was held at the beautiful 1820 Settlers Monument – what a wonderful experience.
When we walked into the auditorium we were amazed by the size of the room, it was massive. The ice was broken, the moment we started our presentations. Even though some of us forgot our words, it all worked out in the end. After our presentations, the adjudicator gave us some excellent advice on how to improve our performances.
