Come rain or shine!

By Shannen Kethro

On the 28th January 2009 many proud parents of the pupils of St Dominic’s Priory came together to support our athletes in a day full of challenging events and fun. Our three houses, Marcellin, Rosary, and Trinity competed in a number of races for the Interhouse Athletics trophy and the Spirit Cup.

“Cold and windy,” was how our supporters described the day, but despite the weather, it did not dampen the spirits and excitement of our athletes who thoroughly enjoyed the day.

The end results showed a very proud Marcellin winning the interhouse trophy. Rosary followed in second place and Trinity came third. The Spirit Cup was awarded to Rosary who showed good team spirit. The top Grade 7 athletes, Jenna Minnie, Britney Linder, and Marcel Luck all did very well. “I had an awesome race and look forward to taking part in next year’s Athletics Day.” Said Britney Linder.

Overall, everyone at Priory had a good day, and they have great expectations for our next Athletics Day in 2010.

Dirk Brandt Athletics Day

By Marcel Lück

It was thrilling walking into the stadium and hearing the exciting noises of the starter pistol being fired second after second.  The Dirk Brandt athletic meeting took place at Westbourne Oval in February 2009.  Many schools took part in this exciting athletics event, including St Dominic’s Priory.  There were many family members supporting the athletes.  The most exciting races were the boys’ 1800 metres and the boys and girls 100 meter open.  Keegan Hoog and Marcel Lück from St Dominic’s Priory took part in the 100 meter sprint and were placed in the top three. Marcel Lück also established a new record in the long jump.  Other athletes who did well were Tomas Lück who came first in both the 60 and 80 meter races, Chrislie-Thandi Niehaus, Camryn Riddle, Warrick Shimmings, Aiden Tuohy and Britney Linder. The most entertaining group were the under eights.  It was their first time at an athletics meeting.  Although it grew hotter and hotter, the athletes from every school tried their best.  It was a great afternoon and everyone enjoyed watching the races and field events.  In the end all the athletes had fun. There were no losers, only winners, as all who took part were winners just by being there.
