‘You get the best effort from others not by lightning a fire beneath them, but by building a fire within them’ - Bob Nelson

Well yes, we do have those who need the fire lit beneath them to get them moving, but how wonderful it is to witness the joy experienced when the fire within starts expressing itself in creative, artistic endeavours.

Our budding artists in the Foundation Phase discovered all about mixing paints to make a colour-wheel, they also made puppets and people representing various careers - all from recycled material!  A mural on road safety, drawing monochromatic pictures, designing insects, finger painting, a mosaic hand sketch and a beautiful paper maché fruit bowl are all items which will soon to be part of your home décor.

Starting with paper this year, our art club members made paper-curled candlesticks and jewellery boxes and then they wove Valentine’s Day baskets and placemats from recycled cereal boxes.

Our experience with clay was such fun!  Pinch pots, ornaments, quaint bowls and egg cups made with coils and personalized name plaques were but a few of the amazing articles which were fired and painted – they looked fantastic!

As the chilly weather set in, our younger group entered a winter wonderland populated with snowmen, reindeer and robin thumbprints.  The older group set to work constructing ‘peep boxes’ which gave us a glimpse into their fantasy worlds.  They also completed writing and illustrating simple, colourful story books to be read to the younger classes.

We have also entered the ‘Design a Robot’ Spur competition, the ‘What I love’ Sanlam 2010 calendar competition, the ‘Create a Cartoon’ Cartoon Network competition and last, but not least, we submitted Grade 4 ‘Creepy Crawly’ pictures and Grade 6 ‘Scary Insect’ 3D creations to the 2009 Grahamstown Eisteddfod.  Melissa van der Merwe achieved a gold and Carmen Potgieter a silver award.  We are very proud of them as we are of all who entered – congratulations!
